Halloween Nerds!
Hi Family! I love Halloween cuz I get to show my true colors. Yes, I'm admitting it...I'm a nerd. But it's ok cuz so is my wife. I was Bret Bretterson and she was Becki Beckerson. Becki and I went to the Dollar Store and two Thrift Stores to find our sweet costumes along with all the accessories. I had this huge calculator that I would pull out of my fanny pack to calculate the distance to the sun, the average weight of the people in the room, and other very important calculations. I hung three ribbons from the fanny pack that said "1st place," "basketball star," and "I love to read." I had my work badge, pedometer, medal around my neck, glasses, church socks, and Mark's old red Nike shoes. Becki had bright pink lip stick, a huge deck of cards that she would do this lame trick with, leopard and tiger and zebra print stuff, oh we both had glow sticks, and we both talked and walked like nerds the whole night. It was so much fun. Our ward had a big party where the kids got to vote for the costume winners. We were 2nd place for the funniest, (but we should've got first!). Oh the candy we gave out to the kids at the "Trunk or Treat" was, of course, Nerds and Smarties. Ha ha we're so funny! Je Suis even got to dress up-

Well another week has already passed. It´s crazy how time flies.
Everyone sounds like they´re doing good. I´m sorry about you´re finger
Becki. I totally forgot it was getting time for Halloween there, and
getting cold too!?! Mom said that there was already a snow in Eagar so
that´s good to hear. Well it´s turning summer here but really there are
no seasons here, just hot and hotter so it should be great. My 3 cold
showers a day always cool me off. Here in Sousa there isn´t too much
humidity so I don´t have to worry about that.
This past week was just great here in Sousa. Altogether there were 9
baptisms, we had three and the other missionariy duplo had 6 so it was a
really good week. We baptized Ailton, Arline, and Carol. Ailton is 14
and Elder Matos was teaching him when I got here and finally said he
wanted to be baptized last week. There was such a change in him it was
just awesome. The first weeks I was here teaching him he was just normal,
not really excited about the message or the book of mormon, but last
week he read every part that we marked and he was keeping the word of
wisdom and every time that he prayed while we were there he would pray to
be ready for his baptism and then receive the priesthood that we taught
him about. It was just an amazing change. Arline is also 14. One day we
had just made a contact on the street and these 2 teenage girls came up
to us and told us they had a friend that wanted to talk to us. My first
thought was that they were snakes (girls that just like missionaries)
but we scheduled a day to teach their friend, Arline. We taught the
first lesson and everything was good. When we returned to teach the next
lesson, she had read all the pages we marked, had read the pamphlet, and
even looked up the questions and answered them in the back of the
pamphlet. It´s great to see people excited about the gospel. Carol is
Karina´s , that was baptized 2 weeks ago, younger sister. They have friends
in the church and they are always excited to talk to us. We are working
with their mom and aunt right now.
This past week Elder Matos and I had 2 divisions, where he went with a
member and taught and I went with another member and taught other
people. That was scary to have all the responsibility of teaching and
talking with the people and everything. It went good though, I ended up
teaching 4 lessons I think and everything was good. It was really hard
though and at times awkward because I didn´t know what to say but it was
good experience for me. Elder Matos visited Vanda, the mom of Davi that
was baptized a couple months ago, Elder Matos has been working with her
since before I got here and then we have been trying to prepare here
for baptism but she always said, “when I feel it´s true, I´ll be
baptized.†Well Elder Matos said that she had 2 dreams and that she´s
going to be baptized this Saturday. Also 2 girls that we´ve been
working with, Ana-Claudia and Marizete have committed to be baptized on
Friday. It´s funny how the Lord works. Last week we had written off these
two because they would never commit to being baptized so we decided to
not visit them any more. Last night when we were walking back to out
apartment, a member came running and told us that he had been talking to
them and they wanted to be baptized. So we scheduled the baptism for
Friday. The work here is great and I love it here. Just when I think that
things are bad and that our investivagors aren´t progressing the Lord
touches their hearts and they have a change.
Well this Sunday will be my first transfer, already 6 weeks since I
arrived. We are thinking that Elder Matos will be transferred and that
I´ll stay but we never know, not until Sunday so that will be
interesting. This last week was great but frustrating. Sometimes I just don´t
feel like doing things but I know that I need to do them. It´s
frustrating to have people laugh at how I say things and many times Elder Matos
has to repeat what I say, especially when I try to ask questions during
the lessons. In Portuguese the work order is exactly the same for
statements and questions, but just the tone of your voice changes. For
example, “You believe in Christ.†And “You believe in Christ?†So
I´m trying to work on that to have people understand me better.
Anyway, Life is good and It sounds like life still goes on back in the
USA. I love you all and thank you for you´re letters and support. Tell
Kari I love her and to not be frustrated. Like dad told me, Patience is
the key work. I know that this is the work of the Lord and that I
can´t do anything without him. That he is the one that can touch the hearts
of people, I con only be worthy of the sprit and do all I can to try to
find people to teach and bring to the gospel.

Fotos!!!
Dessert!!! The other day at a member´s house we had this really good pineaple dessert and I had to have a picture.
The baptisms we had in Sousa this past week on Sunday, 7 of them!!! It was a good week and a really good day.
Elder Matos, My companion the first day that we met. We are waiting here for the bus that took us to Sousa, A 7 1/2 hour bus ride. I was so lost but luckily Elder Matos was there with me. He is 25 and has been a member for 3 years now. He hit his 1 year mark the other week so he has one more year to go on the mission.

Ewe! Gross!
The knife did it...

Long story short, I was using the super sharp knife aunt Sonja gave us to cut up pumpkins to make pumpkin butter. It only took one slice to take away my finger tip and my hopes of giving out cute little jars of butter to friends and family. We called Mark at an unreasonable hour to ask his advice. Thanks again! I just kept pressure on it all night and then went to my Mom's work at a childrens hospital the next day to have her look at it. Fortunately one of the doctors there took a look at it and cauterized it with silver nitrate. VERY PAINFUL! I can't say I am as brave as Lisa is because my little owey kept me down most of the weekend.
But I know all of you would be so proud of Bret who finally got brave enough to looked at it yesterday. I am so proud!!!

Well Family, things here are great. I had zone conference this week in Caico so that was really good. It was all in Portugues and I got a lot our of it so That was a real booster. Caico is about 3 hours away so we took a van there. Anyway, so that was on Wednesday. We left at 3:30 in the morning and got back at 10:00 at night. It was good though. I got the dried fruit that mom sent and that is like gold. I love fruit leather. Sunday we had two baptisms, Francisco and Karina. It was really good. Karina showed up at 7:00 when she was supposed to be there at 6:30 so we were afraid that she wouldn´t show up but she did. We are working with a lot of people and teaching a lot. I really don´t have very much time today because we have other things to do. I wish I could tell you more but I sent a letter that tells more to mom and dad so they can tell you all. Life is good and I am really starting to enjoy things here. The language is coming little by little and every day I try to learn new words. It´s a big task but I just have to take it a little at a time. It was good to hear from everyone because at zone conference we got all of our letters since last conference. I got Becki´s honeymoon map that she made me and that sounded just perfect. I also got the letters from Mom and Dad that you sent on the same day. I would say send them pouch because I only get letters once every 6 weeks at zone conference so save a little money and send them pouch. It is so good to hear from everyone and hear that everyone is doing great. Elder Matos is great and he teaches me a lot. It´s fun to see how far I´ve come in just a month. In two days it will be my 3 month anniversary (and Bret and Becki´s 2 month) so that´s crazy. O, my P-day today is Tuesday, but next week will be Wednesday for the rest of the mission, or until we hear otherwise. Anyway, I love you all, sorry I can´t write more but just know that I´m well taken care of. The members here are great and I´m well fed and don´t have any bears lurking around our apartment (that´s crazy about the bear around our house). Anyway, Pray always andtrust in the Lord, its that easy.

Homecoming update--- finally!
Wowzers! Well i had made a post last week somtime and told all about the rest of homecoming, but it ended up not working, so i will try again. Basically the rest of the week I ran around like a chicken with its' head cut off, getting the senior float done,having the assembly, getting stuff ready for the tailgate part ( which our wonderful parents ended up bringing the grill and everything down there for me- thanks again!) riding in the parade, then decorating. Once all that stuff was done it was a huge relief and I just enjoyed watching the football game. At half time i got crowned princess! I was ahppy about that. We played a really good game against Winslow 35-0. The student section was so loud and spirited, their coach actualy complained that we were too loud, and we were "taunting" his players by cheering- haha. Any way so Sat. was the date- we went and shot clay pigeons (i am an excelllent shot:) then we headed over to Show Low to watcha movie, but got there pretty early so we went thrift store shopping. Kellin got that sweet plaid jacket he is wearing in one of the pics. He bought me a funny popcorn sweater that i wore to the movies. They had me order the popcorn and after telling the lady how much i love popcorn she gave us some extra for free, it was funny, kinda a have to be there type of thing. The date was way fun. So we got home pretty early so we had plenty of time to get ready for the dance. The dance was so incredibly fun! It was deffinantly th funnest dance I have ever been to. EVERYONE was dancing, doing line dances and whatnot. I even taught kellin the pretzel and we had fun doing that. All in all everything turned out perfect. I great way to have my senior year homecoming be. This week Mrs, Kirkham called me into her office to tell me how good she thought everything with and that she had got nothing but possitive feedback from the teachers- so that is deffinatly a plus. Im glad I don't have another dance to plan tho! Well this is gettiing quite lengthy! I love you all!

I recently invested what money I could afford into the company which in about 5 years when we are sold for $100 million it will be worth about 5-10 times as much. That's the plan anyways. Oh, by the way, Clate Mask, Jr. is the President of Infusion. His Dad Clate Mask, Sr. gave the opening prayer at the Priesthood Session of Conference and has also invested in the company. Another week in Paradise

Well i got smarter and am writing this in Word first and then will copy
and paste it (or will try to, everything is in Portuguese). Well this
past week was really good. We had a ward activity on Friday night and
that was a big hit. We had 13 investigators there so that was really
really good. We are teaching a lot of people but did´t have a baptism
last week but will have at least one this Sunday. It´s amazing how much
of a roller coaster life is. One day I´m on top of the world and the
next day all of our appointments fall through and I´m down at the bottom
again. I love it though. Elder Matos is a good trainer and I have
learned a lot. I actually know where we are going now (most of the time) and
am beginning to be able to understand people in regular conversation. I
still have a long long way to go but I won´t let this weigh me down.
Like Mom told me in the last letter, I can´t let things like this weigh
me down but be grateful for what I can understand. Well we got to play
futebol for the first time today and that was a blast. I had some fotos
but its not letting me download them so I will try next week. Its good
to hear that Round Valley and BYU are doing good. I will admit that I
do miss the football games but it´s only 2 years. Sounds like Tami was
busy with Homecoming week and all that and what is this about Lisa
going to driving school? Shame shame shame. Well things here are just
great. The work is progressing and we are actually going to move the chapel
in 2 weeks I think because we have so many people going to church. We
are teaching Rina, Dalton, and Jorge and they might be baptized this
next week. Jorge has a drinking problem but I am praying that he will
stop. We are also working with Francisco and his family and have a lot of
references we are receiving from Paulo Henrique and Robson (the two
young boys we baptized last week). We are working with Robson´s parents
and they came to the activity and really liked it. At the activity Elder
Matos and I did a skit where I was his hands and he explained what
Missionaries do before they leave the apartment. I got to brush his teeth
and shave and feed him and other things like that. It was good and we
got a lot of laughs. The members here are great and the people are so
nice, so nice that sometimes its a problem because it is hard to tell
which ones just like you and which ones like the gospel. Well I love you
and it was good to hear from Mom about everything. We have zone
conference this week and so I will receive my leters I have been receiving.
Sousa is so far away only once every zone conference we get letters and
we don´t have an address here in Sousa so i´m looking forward to some
letters. Well I better go. Be good and always be a good example. People
are always watching.

Day 2- Time Travel Tuesday!
Well today was day two! i was originally going to dress 80's with the big side ponytail and all, but decided not to last minuite. Any way the icecream social was a big success today, everyone seemed to really enojoy themselves. We had it during lunch infront of the school, and it was a perfect, warm beautiuful day.... it wasnt raining or snowing and the wind was hardly even blowing!:) I included a picture of my choir teacher Mr. Hagerman, becasue i thought he was pretty funny! OH and today they announced the "finalinst" for homecoming royalty, girls- Chandra Sessions, Marcee Walker, and ME:) boys: Trever Nicoll, Ray Hamblin, and Ross Eagar, so everyone will vote again just on those three and then they will announce royalty at the game. I actually didnt evem want my name to be in the voting because I am going to be so stinkin' busy friday, and i have recieved cool awards before, but Im really happy because it is my senior year and what not! Anyway i better get to bed! love you!

Well this is my third time trying to send a letter so I hope it works.
Things are great here. it´s still hot and we are working hard. We had 4
baptisms, Vitoria and Maria on wednesday which asked me to baptize them
so that was an awesome experience, and then Paul Henrique and Robson
last night. Things are going good and we are always teaching. I´m sorry

basketball because they like pictures like that. I dont know exactly where
they are. They could be in my yellow container or the boxes by my bed.

Well this is my third time trying to send a letter so I hope it works.
Things are great here. it´s still hot and we are working hard. We had 4
baptisms, Vitoria and Maria on wednesday which asked me to baptize them
so that was an awesome experience, and then Paul Henrique and Robson
last night. Things are going good and we are always teaching. I´m sorry
this is short but I don´t have any more time. i love you all and hope
you are doing well.

spirit week! day 1 AHOY MATEE!
WELL I havent posted for a while because i have been so busy getting everything ready for spirit week, but now it is here! I got asked by Kellin Walker, which i am excited about. I have been busy planning and icecream social tuesday, carbashing and bonfire wed., car decorating contest thursday, the assembly, parade and a tailgate party friday, then of course the actual dance. I have alot of people helping tho, so it should all turn out good! anyway i'll take alot of pictures and post them when i can! Today was pirate day, you cant see my pants but they were pretty sweet! any way love you all!
